Correct amount of matcha on a tea spoon

The correct amount of matcha is about 1.8 grams for one serving.  It is about 2 scoops with chashaku or a special bamboo scoop for matcha.  You mix it with about 60 ml (2 oz) of water.  I have shown you some pictures on a previousentry for how much the macha shouldlook on chashaku.   This post would serve as a guideline to those who don't have a chashaku and are only using ordinary spoons.  The pictures below shows you how much the correct amount of matcha would look like on a regular teaspoon.  I was a little excited to see how it would look like.  I always use chashaku, and this was my first time using an ordinary spoon.

This is how regular teaspoon would look like.   The American quarter coin just acts as an additional basis.

Here is how a 1.8 gram of matcha looks like on a regular teaspoon.  I already sifted the macha and surprisingly, it still got quite a heap of scoop!!

Now, this is how matcha looks like if un-shifted.  It has less volume, so you don’t have to scoop so much.

1.8 gram is not the absolute amount.  You may adjust depending on the preference of your own taste buds.  I hope these pictures will help.

  1. Strange I weighted 2 scoops of matcha with chashaku, and at best get around 1 gram of matcha powder. Using quite good (.1g) electronic scale.
So unless my chashaku is different (width 9.5mm), it is impossible to get the results as with the spoon.

    1. I noticed that a little difference of a chashaku’s tip affects the ease of scooping. One of the chashakus at my tea school has a slightly shorter and gentle-angled tip. I often have difficulty scooping enough matcha with the chashaku. You can see some photos of my chachaku with 1.8 grams (1.2+0.6) of matcha in the previous post. http://everyonestea.blogspot.jp/2012/04/correct-amount-of-matcha.html The width of my chashaku is 11mm.

  2. I weighed 1/2 tsp of matcha and got 0.92 grams on a very good balance (I work in a lab...don't tell my supervisor!). So you're right on the money with 1.8 grams per tsp.

    2. When you say 1/2 teaspoon of matcha, you are talking about the standard teaspoon used as a measure of volume in recipes, right?

I have both a chachaku and a matcha spoon. The chachaku is a bit fustrating because I never know if I'm scooping the right amount. I don't know how heaped the chachaku has to be. The matcha spoon is supposed to hold 1 g of matcha powder. People said it's one serving but thanks to this post now I know that 1 g of matcha powder only yields about half a serving (1 oz or 30 ml water),

  5. I use 2 tsp..I use to use tbsp !! I think because I have fibromyalgia it is actually beneficial to have 2 tsp. I dissolve it in hot water just enough to dissolve and mix into a smoothie. so tasty!! and matcha doesn't make my heart race like coffee, gives me good energy. :)
